Insulin Pump

Problem

Diabetic management is a difficult process, where patients face the problem of forgetting to take insulin at a correct time needing continuous vigilance from caretakers and taking the wrong dosage of insulin, creating difficulties in providing a treatment plan.
On the other hand, they have the stress of regular injection of insulin throughout the day creating difficulties in their personal and social life and also it needs a lot of effort.

User

The main beneficiaries are Insulin-dependent diabetic patients who take insulin at different schedules throughout the day.

My Role

The solution concept was a portable device called an insulin pump which pumps Insulin from the reservoir it contains to the user’s body through a medically safe transfusion system. The project was in prototyping stage where my role was to design a casing which accommodates all the prototyping electronics, but the model should be feasible to be scaled down in the future during the product phase.

Design Process

This was my first portable electronic device design which was very challenging during the topology of boards and components, Making the device compact was the main goal, but a board whose size was large was a constraint there. I tried out many arrangements to make it compact and finally arrived at a 2 layer arrangement which was more compact in the prototyping stage. One more major constraint was to make the reservoir removable to make the user replace the reservoir once it is empty. The device was aesthetically designed and 3D printed successfully.
